Haw Flakes.
I don’t even know it that’s the name of the food or a trade name. Basta when you say “Haw Flakes,” we all know what that is. Which child of the past generation hadn’t experienced “playing” with Haw Flakes in the following manner:
Playmate: Body of Christ
You: Amen
[the playmate then puts the Haw Flakes on your tongue]
Once, we even took it to the next level and decorated moving pods to resemble a small chapel, with chairs and everything, and of course, with a priest [and we were all girls playing then].
And don’t you notice that we play this when we are actually not yet eligible for communion? When you reach that age when you take that real first communion [12 I think], because you can get the real thing, you stop eating Haw Flakes with that “Body of Christ” dialogue.
Regardless, most of us have had our “first communions” using Haw Flakes.
Those who can relate, raise your hands; those who cannot, I wonder what kind of childhood you had.
i’m raising my hand na po. the last time i ate that was when we were in binondo for the y2k conversion (ang tagal na pala!). we bought it from carvajal (i just love that street) - one big pack!
just wanted to share this “communion” story of my friend. she was about to have her 1st communion, she asked her elder sister “ano sasabihin ko ‘pag sinabi ng pari - Body of Christ ?” elder sister said - “sabihin mo - maskulado.”
Yes, I remember those, and we did the “Body of Christ” game too. We used to line up so that the person who has the Haw acts like a priest…lol.
Posted by kayni at February 11, 2009, 10:42 pmUmm, Kg, ngayon ko lang alam na masarap ang Haw Flakes, haha…hindi ko natikman. LAst Christmas, a cousin sent us a balikbayan box from HK and included in it was a box of Haw Flakes, we were apprehensive in trying it because of the rumored toxic things China includes in their foods, so i never gave my children a taste of it. Masilipi nga ulit sa pantry kung may natira pa, hahaha. Wala kasi nito dito sa amin, honest, peksman.
Posted by sheng at February 12, 2009, 5:49 amsheng, talaga! wawa ka naman. he! he! i wouldn’t know if it’s ok to eat nowadays, with all the “stuff” about anything coming from China. dati kasi sige, go! kain lang. we had no worries about that.
Posted by kumarenggrace at February 12, 2009, 7:01 amHehe Kami din, pero sana noon pa mayroon nito para nasama dun sa ceremony ng patay-patayan namin.
Hands down. Would you believe hindi pa ko nakatikim nyan until now?
homaygath! ginagawa din namin yan! sobrang funny! this really brought back a lot of memories!
ahhh… yun pala tawag dun hehe ngayon ko lang nalaman
ako bumili nung ginagamit na ostiya sa supermarket. ahihihi.
Kami din ginagawa namin ito noon. Good stuff! ![]()
Brings back good memories!
Ako rin!! I have both my arms raised up high!
I even gave myself my own haw flakes communion acting as the priest and the layperson at the same time!
Thanks for this post, i enjoyed the nostalgia.
he! he! kakatuwa tayo nung mga bata ano?
hahah! lahat yata tayo dumaan dito
Posted by Lantaw at February 16, 2009, 12:10 pmall i could say is - AMEN .. grabe you really captured the true essence of haw flakes
super correct ka dyan.. maryon pa ba niyan sa Pinas?
toni, i’ve seen some of these, pero di na ata Haw Flakes ang brand.
Posted by kumarenggrace at February 17, 2009, 7:25 pmBrings back memories… I can’t remember the last time I ate this. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Posted by sassy mom at February 22, 2009, 12:22 pmi remember eating hawflakes in grade school, and gee we have this kids in queue with me acting as priestess saying body of christ..amen. hehe
sampaloc is to pinoys as hawflakes is to the chinese. i like the tangy taste to suppress hunger or to cap an oily meal. nice nice haw.
the best haw is the sunflower brand. has a crisp, wafery taste. don’t settle for anything less. there were haws, similar in packaging with the product more in sugar so don’t be duped.
Posted by tina at July 7, 2009, 6:21 pmYes, I remember and I have vivid memories of this childhood treat!
Funny thing is yung unang flake sa ibabaw or the last flake sa pinaka ilalim is difficult to remove and is most often than not, stuck to the paper/wrapper. Pag natanggal mo mayroon pa rin maiiwan na unting papel na nakadikit and you’ll end up eating that small piece of paper as well
