I once came upon something David Letterman said in his show. Although I can’t remember the exact words, it goes something like this:
Eighty percent of Americans said they would be willing to donate their liver to a total stranger…. Yeah right, they won’t even let someone else ahead of them in traffic.

Bulls eye! I know he intended it to be funny, but it does hit a spot. Most people think that we need some mind-blowing, world-changing ways to help and do something for other people, such as to build an orphanage for street children, to donate 1 million pesos to a hospital, or to give discount dining room furniture to the single parent next door. Yes, these are great, great ways to help. And most people are dreaming of doing this. “When I win the lotto, I will donate half of it to church” is a common line.
What is saddening though is that lot of people say they will do these things, but they can’t even say thank you to the weary cashier who has been working for 15 hours, or say a nice word about coworker, or run an errand for a sick landlady.
And what most people don’t realize is that doing something for others can be very simple! In our everyday lives, we are always given the chance to touch someone’s life, even in a small way like opening a door for a person who has his/her hands full, talking with our elderly neighbor who craves for someone to talk to, or, yes, letting someone else ahead of us in traffic.
Have a great week my friends!
I agree. Greatness comes from small good deeds - from smiling, to simple thank yous, to simply listening to your friend’s troubles. It may be a small thing, but to the receiver, it could be the world.
Have a wonderful week, kg.
Posted by kayni at January 20, 2009, 9:48 amthere are people who do good deeds everyday, but there are some who do good deeds one time big time. in any case, both have done good to the world. i just hope we can do good deeds both in little and big ways in any way we can!

Posted by sheng at January 20, 2009, 11:23 ami remembered a quote i received from a highschool friend parang naipadala ko yata sayo ate
” If God pays you P1 for every kind word you speak and takes away P1 for every unkind word you say, will you be rich or poor?” I think you’d be sooo rich ate
you are such a nice person and this post is an eyeopener, i said “thank you” to a crew in mcdonalds this morning hehehe now i feel happy i did that
This reminded me of the movie “eleven pounds”. Smith donated his organs to deserving and thankful people.
“Thank you” — wonderful words that we all love to hear but forget to say. “sorry” is another.
In all your dealings in life you must always act with justice, give everyone his due (may it be respect, money, time, attention etc) and observe honesty and good faith.
Posted by glennj at January 21, 2009, 3:17 amyeine, yes you did text me that…and I remembered this post. kindness is the best way to be happy diba?
Posted by kumarenggrace at January 21, 2009, 6:27 amI totally agree! We practice gratitude every single time we get. Small gestures go very far
Some people just don’t realize it…
