I recently heard in a radio news program that the percentage of people who read because they actually love (or like) it has been decreasing over the years. Yes, people have been reading books, magazines, newspapers…but they do so because they have to. And nowadays, reading has become more of a need than a want.
I love reading. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve come to love sitting somewhere quiet (sometimes munching chichiria) and just being lost in whatever I was reading!
I’ve was able to “go” to so many places, like Canada, the United States, Rome, France, Hogwarts, Middle Earth, Narnia, the outer space, and a lot, lot more. I’ve “met” presidents, heroes, celebrities, and even wizards, talking animals, and fairies. I’ve “experienced” bungee jumping, racing cars, parachuting, and flying. I “know” how to cook paella, sew a gown, make an eight knot, fix a car, assemble an aircon, and even make a bomb! I’ve “competed” in marathons, “joined” pie-eating contests, and “watched” duels! I’ve “been” to war, in prison, and to heaven. I’ve "had" breast cancer, AIDS, and multiple sclerosis. I was “there” when the petroleum jelly was discovered, when Jose Rizal was executed, when the first human being stepped on the moon, and when Princess of the Stars sunk. I’ve "seen" the Mona Lisa, the Sistine Chapel, and the Eiffel Tower. To summarize, I’ve been around the world not in eighty days but in eighty minutes.
I wouldn’t have experienced all of these and many more others if I have not picked up my first book and read and actually love it. So I hope that the number of people who love to read will increase again and get to see the wonders that reading can do for them.
Amen!
That book-lending project of the former Writer’s Guild Pres @ SPI was a very good (and generous) move. It actually made me happy to see people lining up to borrow those books.
My love affair with books started from the very first day I saw one; I guess even before i actually started to learn how to read.
My parents weren’t able to finish high school, but it did not stop them from liking reading. They are such voracious readers (from pambalot ng tinapa to comics to books) that as I kid, I thought that it’s one of the adult things you do.
Posted by TPS at June 28, 2008, 9:36 amI didn’t really read when I was growing up. Then I got stuck with a job here and got to know well-read people like Paul. He talks about the books that he read and how “astig” it was. So I started reading so I somehow know what he’s talking about (esp when we’re drunk). ![]()
Reading is wonderful. I used to read a least one hour each night no matter how tired I was.
I really have to start reading again.
i love reading…but the habit just got lost with the schedule that I keep these days (plant shifter, freelancer, mother, wife, homemaker…); even squeezing a book to read before bedtime seems impossible. i even have books that i bought before being a Mrs. Conti and still they are unread…i do hope to get the habit back…though it might take a toll, which is sad. still, i buy books whenever i see a good one…at least when i get back to reading again, i’ll have lots to chose from…now that’s a nice thought…he he he…

i love to learn, to enjoy, and to experience fantastic things–these i get from reading all at once.
when i was kid until college, i lose interest immediately in a book whenever it becomes a required reading (kahit maganda pa siya!). people should read because they want to, and not because they have to (ang sad naman…).
