I remember an exercise that we had in a retreat before where the retreat master drew a black dot the size of a peso coin in the middle of a clean white sheet of paper. She then proceeded to ask us, "What do you see?" You know what? Eerybody answered, "A black dot!" (with all conviction). She then pointed out that no one even saw the white paper.
We tend to be like this most of the time…seeing the negative instead of the positive. We feel the thorns instead of smelling the rose. Sometimes, we may not even be aware that we are doing this. Seeing the bright side of things has been one aspect of my life that I have constantly tried to work on…it’s healthier, better for the soul, better for the heart, better for our lives. One thing I can say is that life is happier when we focus on our blessings instead of our problems. Yes, we do have to face the reality of our problems (after all, we have to prevent the black dot from becoming bigger)…but we have the choice of facing it with a smiling face or a crying face. We have the choice to either whine or be thankful.
The world is already full of negativity that we should start with ourselves and try to emanate that aura of positivity. Who knows, we might be helping out someone simply by emitting postiive forces around us!
Are You Blessed?
(Author Unknown, Source Unknown )
If you woke up this morning with more health than illness…you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.
If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation…you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.
If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep…you are richer than 75% of this world.
If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace… you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy.
If your parents are still alive and still married…you are very rare, even in the
If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful…you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not.
If you prayed yesterday and today…you are in the minority because you believe God does hear and answer prayers.
If you can read now, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.
So try it…focus on the white paper instead of the black dot!
I totally agree with you, eks ,when you said that “you cannot focus on the white paper without noticing the black dot.” Truli-ly! But focusing on the white paper does not mean one has to IGNORE the black dot. As I have said, we also have to prevent the black dot from getting larger or even multiplying. I said that yes, we have to face our problems, but we have the choice to face it with smiling faces or with crying (if not growling) faces…
It’s just that some people tend to focus only on the black dot, as if there’s no white paper. I think it’s time we focus on the positive things in our lives…
:) OKAY? thanks for posting! he! he!
Pa OT (off-topic) lang ha…Hurt lang ako na di mo nakilala boses ko…akala ko nung sinabi ni Mado na sexy…gets mo na agad…he! he! PEACE!
Posted by kumarenggrace at June 1, 2008, 8:16 pmI think it’s a matter of balancing your perspective. We need to acknowledge our negative challenges and DO something about it, and be grateful for the positive things. Mali yung mag-focus lang tayo sa positive at ignore na yung negative, or vice versa. Of course, dapat laging may positive attitude when solving the negative.
Did I make sense? Parang hindi yata masyado.
Yes, you do make sense…and I agree with you.
I think that most readers are getting me wrong: Let me emphasize that I did not mean to say that focusing on the white paper equals ignoring the black dot…because you have to face the black dot, you have to eliminate it or prevent it from getting bigger.
What I meant was we tend to focus only on the negative aspects of our lives, maliit man o malaki, when we have a very big white paper! Yes, we have to face our problems, but at the end of the day, we have to realize that the white paper is much, much bigger than the black dot…and that’s what we should be thankful for…
BOW!!!
you all have a point. i think kg is just trying to remind us all that a black dot is not all there is. there’s a white paper that also needs attention. in life, we should have a balanced perspective regarding trials or problems. we should not feel defeated or lose hope when negative things come our way because there are still good things, better things, in life that will keep us strong and hopeful.
tama ba kg? ![]()
anyway, this is a good entry. very inspiring. keep it up!
Correct ka2x!
:)

but the black dot doesn’t necessarily translate to something negative… noticing the black dot, imho, means you have a target. you have a focus.
you cannot focus on the white paper — technically, essentially, and whatever-ly) without noticing the black dot (lalo na at nasa gitna siya ng papel).
a bit defensive ako kasi if i were in that situation, i’d say ‘black dot’ din.
hehehe.
(o yan, pinost ko na. hehehe.)
