Destiny versus free will is a debate that has gone on for centuries…and still no answer. I believe that there is really no black-and-white answer here, only personal conviction, personal beliefs. I’d like to think of it as whatever we choose and decide to do as a result of these beliefs and convictions, we would eventually be led to our destiny.
Destiny
(author and source unknown)
During a momentous battle, a Japanese general decided to attack even though his army was greatly outnumbered. He was confident they would win, but his men were filled with doubt.
On the way to the battle, they stopped at a religious shrine. After praying with the men, the general took out a coin and said, "I shall now toss this coin. If it is heads, we shall win. If it is tails we shall lose."
"Destiny will now reveal itself."
He threw the coin into the air and all watched intently as it landed. It was heads. The soldiers were so overjoyed and filled with confidence that they vigorously attacked the enemy and were victorious.
After the battle. a lieutenant remarked to the general, "No one can change destiny."
"Quite right," the general replied as he showed the lieutenant the coin, which had heads on both sides.
But then, I am bugged by a question: Can destiny be changed? Another point to ponder on as April comes to an end…
if Neo can, why can’t we?
destiny is indeed the product of our collective actions, which are most of the time the consequences of freewill. i say “collective action” and “most of the time” because wanting to do something does not mean you can actually do it. (i always wanted to have a date with jessica alba.)
destiny, at most, is when you meet your love love the first time. whether you want to introduce yourself and hope to make it to the next level will depend on your free will. corny.
Ok ang exmple mo ha…yes. I’d like to believe that we are responsible for our own destiny….that where we are now is a result of our past decisions and actions.
So x, the mere fact that you and Jessica Alba have not gone out on a date yet is a result of your NOT going to the US and looking for her?
i think destiny brought me here to read this post. i had just finished writing a post which is more or less of the same topic.
i think i believe in destiny. i believe that everything has already been written. we choose that way we do because we are bound to make those decisions. we do the things we do because we are destined to do so.

I do agree with you, “things happen for a reason.” Sometimes, we can’t see the reason, but I believe that what we are today is a result of what we have done in the past (be it positive or negative)…:)

Yes destiny can be changed. It is because of the nature of human life. You make all sorts of decisions in life that affect your future. Let us take Jose Rizal as an example.
When he was young he wanted to become a priest. In effect that was his destiny because everything that he did like studying and seeking advice from pastors lead to that path.
But when the Spaniards decided to kill the Gomburza, this triggered the change of Jose Rizal to become the hero that we all know.
Destiny is a product of our actions. Not a pre-designed pathway that we just walk on.
